How To Have A Happy Winter!

How To Have A Happy Winter!

It’s no secret that I’m not a fan of winter…All that dark and all that cold. Ick/Burr! So here are a few strategies that I use to banish those winter blues.

Let there be light!
One factor that effects your mood in winter is the lack of sunlight. Sunlight increases the levels of serotonin (the happy hormone) in your body. It also helps to suppress melatonin a chemical which leads to drowsiness and sleep. The sun helps your body to produce vitamin D. This vital nutrient boosts your mood and strengthens your immune system. So with the lack of sunlight, it is no wonder you feel a little sluggish and sad in the winter.

So what can you do?
  • Get outside to increase your levels of serotonin. Go for a little walk outside and you’ll increase your serotonin (feel good hormones) even more and feel even better.
  • Open the curtains or blinds. Let the daylight into your house.  Surround yourself with light, happy colors. Turn on more lights or add extra lamps into your house.
  • Purchase a Himalayan Salt lamp, it gives off a type of ion that boosts your mood.
  • If you really feel sad, invest in a full spectrum of light or light box.
  • Take a vitamin D supplement.

Stay Warm, Stay Well!
Winter cold can make you feel exhausted. Your body actually burns more calories, expends way more energy, when you’re cold. Shivering can increase your metabolic rate as much as five fold and feels miserable. It's no surprise you feel more tired in the winter cold.

So what can you do?
  • Dress in layers. Wear undershirts, under layers of shirts and sweaters. Even consider long johns!
  • When outside wear a warm coat, scarf, gloves, and especially a hat. Remember a significant portion of your body heat is lost through your head.
  • Don’t neglect your feet. Wear warm socks and shoes or boots that protect your feet from wetness as well as cold.
  • Sit by the fire or use little electric space heaters to provide extra warmth. One of my favorite techniques, that I learned from my husband, is to use a heating pad to stay warm.
  • Then there is snuggling! Cuddle with your loved ones and pets under big fluffy blankets or quilts.

So I hope these simple strategies add a little light and warmth to your life and make your winter brighter and happier. Let me know what you do to battle the winter blues…leave a comment below.

Have you replaced your skin care routine with safe, organic products?

IN Intelligent Neutrients organic beauty
Everyone who knows me knows that for the past year I have been making a concerted effort to replace my toxic personal care products with safer more environmentally friendly products. For most items it was an easy trade, bad for good. But replacing my face care routine was exceedingly hard. I was very, very satisfied with everything about my old products, except their hazardous rating on the EWG.*
My products were in the 4-7 range, which equals moderate to high risk. Yuck! (See the chart below)
I was going for the ‘GREEN’, organic products with ingredients that had a low risk. Another major problem to finding a good skin care regime was that I am sensitive to aloe vera and most organic creams contain a ton of aloe. But the most serious impediment to finding my new, safe skincare regimen...well, I am picky, really picky!

So for a year I persevered, experimenting and testing one cream after another, and finally succeeded in finding some really great skin care products.

One contender that came close to replacing my old products was Juice Beauty’s Stem Cellular collection. They are a blend of Vitamin C and Fruit Stem Cells infused into an organic resveratrol rich grape seed base. I loved the smell of these products, but the jars were a little complicated. Great products that just missed the mark for me, but they came in number one with some of my friends.

100% pure is another company with wonderful, safe products, that won over many of my friends. I enjoyed a lot of 100% Pure’s night creams and eye creams but many of their products contained aloe, so I avoided them. They did give me a free tube of ‘Cranberry Glow Lip & Cheek Tint’ (Pure fruit pigments in a base of skin and lip softening and moisturizing shea and cocoa butters YUM!) I put this on when I want to feel pretty.
Purity Cosmetics
So what products won my heart but more specifically my skin...In the day it is definitely IN, Intelligent Nutrients. Their anti-aging mist, serum, and moisturizer are way better than my old products. They are a pleasurable to put on my skin. My face feels wonderful and looks fantastic! I love the earthy smell of their products. Intelligent Nutrients’ plant stem cell eye gel is great too. It does however, spit out from the dispenser. It helps to cup your hand around the opening when you pump. So what about the night...yep...I use Earth Fare Organic Coconut Oil! It makes the best night cream.

Have you tried any safe, organic skin care products?
If you have, I’d love to hear about what you have used. Share a comment below.

Two Simple Practices To Cultivate Compassion! http://crazysunom.com/index.html

“If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.”
- Dalai Lama
THE PRACTICE OF TONGLEN To care about other people who are fearful, angry, jealous, overpowered by addictions of all kinds, arrogant, proud, miserly, selfish, mean —you name it— to have compassion and to care for these people, means not to run from the pain of finding these things in ourselves. In fact, one's whole attitude toward pain can change. Instead of fending it off and hiding from it, one could open one's heart and allow oneself to feel that pain, feel it as something that will soften and purify us and make us far more loving and kind.

The tonglen practice is a method for connecting with suffering —ours and that which is all around us— everywhere we go. It is a method for overcoming fear of suffering and for dissolving the tightness of our heart. Primarily it is a method for awakening the compassion that is inherent in all of us, no matter how cruel or cold we might seem to be.

We begin the practice by taking on the suffering of a person we know to be hurting and who we wish to help. For instance, if you know of a child who is being hurt, you breathe in the wish to take away all the pain and fear of that child. Then, as you breathe out, you send the child happiness, joy or whatever would relieve their pain. This is the core of the practice: breathing in other's pain so they can be well and have more space to relax and open, and breathing out, sending them relaxation or whatever you feel would bring them relief and happiness.

"Before we can generate compassion and love, it is important to have a clear understanding of what we understand compassion and love to be. In simple terms, compassion and love can be defined as positive thoughts and feelings that give rise to such essential things in life as hope, courage, determination, and inner strength. In the Buddhist tradition, compassion and love are seen as two aspects of the same thing: Compassion is the wish for another being to be free from suffering; love is wanting them to have happiness."
- The Dalai Lama

COMPASSION
“Stay where you are. Find your own Calcutta. Find the sick, the suffering, and the lonely right there where you are — in your own homes and in your own families, in your workplaces and in your schools. You can find Calcutta all over the world, if you have the eyes to see. Everywhere, wherever you go, you find people who are unwanted, unloved, uncared for, just rejected by society — completely forgotten, completely left alone.”
-Mother Teresa
(1910-1997); Founder Of The Missionaries Of Charity
Mother Theresa
"Our human compassion binds us the one to the other - not in pity or patronizingly, but as human beings who have learnt how to turn our common suffering into hope for the future."-Nelson Mandela
Thích Nhất Hạnh
Thich Nhat Hanh was a Vietnamese refugee who, instead of becoming bitter after being sent into exile, set up foundations to help other refugees that were too poor to buy food and clothes. He tried to teach people to be mindful of the natural world through poetry and lectures. Even though things were bad, he did his best to remain positive. I made this portrait using his poetry and teachings because I thought that doing so would create more understanding of who this man is.

The essence of love and compassion is understanding, the ability to recognize the physical, material, and psychological suffering of others, to put ourselves "inside the skin" of the other.  We "go inside" their body, feelings, and mental formations, and witness for ourselves their suffering.  Shallow observation as an outsider is not enough to see their suffering.  We must become one with the subject of our observation.  When we are in contact with another's suffering, a feeling of compassion is born in us. Compassion means, literally, "to suffer with."
-Thich Nhat Hanh

COMMONALITIES PRACTICE Instead of recognizing the differences between yourself and others, try to recognize what you have in common. At the root of it all, we are all human beings. We need food, and shelter, and love. We crave attention, and recognition, and affection, and above all, happiness. Reflect on these commonalities you have with every other human being, and ignore the differences. One of my favorite exercises comes from a great article from Ode Magazine — it’s a five-step exercise to do when you meet friends and strangers. Do it discreetly and try to do all the steps with the same person. With your attention geared to the other person, tell yourself:

Step 1: “Just like me, this person is seeking happiness in his/her life.”

Step 2: “Just like me, this person is trying to avoid suffering in his/her life.”

Step 3: “Just like me, this person has known sadness, loneliness and despair.”

Step 4: “Just like me, this person is seeking to fill his/her needs.”

Step 5: “Just like me, this person is learning about life.”

Partner Up For New Year's Success! http://crazysunom.com/index.html

Partner Up For New Year’s Success!

11/25/2013
Crazy Sun MindBody Yoga Class

It’s that time of year again. And soon we will be making New Year’s resolutions to commit to heath and fitness. Experts warn the first six to eight weeks can "make it or break it" for any lifestyle change. But did you know that if you exercise with a friend, you have a much greater chance succeeding?

The buddy system may be the answer for those whose idealism doesn't match their ability to persevere. Experts say that an exercise partner provides a combination accountability and support that ensures success. "You're more likely to stick with a routine if someone else is there," says Cedric Bryant, chief science officer for the American Council on Exercise. "It's the accountability factor.”

A study conducted by Jack Raglin, an associate professor of kinesiology at Indiana University, found that couples who worked out separately had a 50 percent dropout rate after a year; whereas couples who exercised together, regardless of whether they focused on the same type of exercise, had only a 10 percent dropout rate.

Another study from Mark Conner, Ph.D., of the Institute of Psychological Science at the University of Leeds, and his colleagues Dr. Andrew Prestwich and Dr. Rebecca Lawton, has demonstrated that the buddy system boosts the likelihood of sticking to your New Year’s resolutions.

In this study employees volunteered to increase their levels of exercise. Some were left to do it on their own; others were asked to recruit a partner. Researchers checked the progress of the volunteers after one, three and six months to see how the employees were doing. “It was quite clear that working together and joint planning really helped employees stick to their new exercise regimes. Moreover, the involvement of a partner in planning had a sustained effect that was still noticeable after six months.”

So there it is...working out with a partner really ups the odds that you'll honor your exercise commitments, making it easier to meet your health and fitness goals. So call a friend and make exercise plans today!

Reduce Holiday Stress With Yoga Lessons!

Picture
The Holiday season is fast approaching! Even though the  holidays are a time for being with family, for eating good food, for presents and fun, the holidays can also be very stressful. Dealing with the throngs of shoppers, family visits and endless holiday parties can take its toll on both the body and the mind. Yoga lessons are just the thing to ease the tension.

Studies have proven that yoga reduces stress and anxiety physically and mentally. According to University of Maryland Medical Center: Yoga improves fitness, lowers blood pressure, promotes relaxation and self-confidence, and reduces stress and anxiety. People who practice yoga tend to have good coordination, posture, flexibility, range of motion, concentration, sleep habits, and digestion. Yoga is a complementary therapy that has been used with conventional medicine to help treat a wide range of health problems. Studies show that yoga may help the following conditions:

  • Anxiety and stress
  • Arthritis, both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis
  • Asthma
  • Cancer, as an additional therapy to reduce stress and strengthen the immune system. One study of 68 breast cancer patients found that those who practiced yoga has less anxiety and depression compared to those who didn't. Even the DNA damage from radiotherapy was slightly less in the yoga group compared to the control group.
  • Long-lasting back pain
  • Depression
  • Diabetes
  • Epilepsy
  • Heart disease, by lowering cholesterol levels, lowering blood pressure, lessening stress, and reducing how often people had chest pain and how severe it was (when combined with a healthy diet)
  • High blood pressure
  • Hormonal problems
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Lung diseases
  • Pregnancy
  • Migraine headaches
In addition, yoga postures that stretch and strengthen joints in the upper body may improve grip strength and reduce pain in people with carpal tunnel syndrome.*

Yoga practice has also been shown to lower the levels of the stress hormone, cortisol in the body. Excessive Cortisol not only causes feelings of stress and anxiety but also depression, osteoporosis, diabetes, and heart disease. High levels of cortisol have also been linked to excessive abdominal fat and weight gain. Yoga induces a "relaxation response" associated with reduced nervous system activity and a feeling of well-being due to an increase in endorphins-a feel good hormone. According to  another  study, 'Antioxidant Effects of Regular Yoga Training,'  yoga  efficiently strengthens the antioxidant systems & decreases oxidative stress.
Yoga studies have proven that regular yoga practice not only reduces stress but also helps in the treatment of stress related diseases. So this holiday season, grab your mat & come to yoga class!

The Drink Of My Dreams!

A couple of years ago when I was visiting my daughter in LA, she took me to a great vegan restaurant. There I discovered the drink of my dreams; grapefruit, kale, and ginger juiced! When I came home I experimented with this combination, often adding other ingredients, and came up with a lot of tasty concoctions. I do it in the Ninja mixer instead of the juicer so it still has all the fiber. Although my husband says it looks like sludge. The basic recipe is:

1&1/2 grapefruits peeled
About 1 cup or a large handful of fresh organic kale
A chunk of fresh ginger
1 scoop of Garden of Life, Perfect Food Raw (raw organic green super food)

Besides being delicious grapefruit, kale and ginger have many benefits. In Baseline of Health, Beth Levine writes, "Pink grapefruit provides 80 percent of your daily vitamin C needs in a typical serving of half the fruit, is proven to bolster the immune system, can detoxify the body, and even slow the growth rate of tumors. It is also chock full of lycopene, which is an antioxidant that has been found to lower the risk of both bladder and prostate cancer. And pink grapefruit provides you with 6 percent of the RDA of vitamin A, another valuable nutrient that helps maintain the health of the retina, particularly important for our vision in lower light.
Yellow grapefruit is no slouch, either, in the vitamin and nutrient department. Just under its more colorful cousin, the yellow grapefruit health benefits include 73.3 percent of your vitamin C quota for the day, as well as an impressive 23.7 percent of vitamin A." http://www.jonbarron.org/article/celebrate-citrus-grapefruit?utm_source=iContact&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Daily%20Alerts&utm_content=DHT+3%2F6%2F13

In the article, Top 10 Health Benefits of Eating Kale, Alison Lewis reveals the many advantages to including Kale in your diet. Kale is high in iron and has more calcium than milk! It is a great source of vitamins A, C, & K .  Kale is filled with powerful antioxidants, carotenoids and flavonoids, that help protect against various chronic diseases. " Kale is a great anti-inflammatory food. One cup of kale is filled with 10% of the RDA of omega-3 fatty acids, which help, fight against arthritis, asthma and autoimmune disorders." Not only that but Kale is low in calories and high in fiber! http://www.mindbodygreen.com/0-4408/Top-10-Health-Benefits-of-Eating-Kale.html

Ginger has been traditionally used to treat colds and flu. Studies have shown that ginger helps kill influenza viruses, and increases the immune system's ability to fight infection. Ginger improves the absorption of essential nutrients in the body. It also relieves nausea, gas, and stomach cramps. And most importantly, the  Ayurvedic texts credit ginger with potent aphrodisiac powers.
So enjoy a large glass of the drink of my dreams and maybe it will become your dream drink too!

Are Your Products Are Filled With Toxins?

After viewing this video, I felt it was important to bring awareness to this serious issue. Many of the ingredients in the products that we use on a daily basis are dangerous to our health. “Your skin is the largest organ of your body and since it is porous, it absorbs whatever you put on it. A study published in the American Journal of Public Health looked into the skin’s absorption rates of chemicals found in drinking water. It showed that the skin absorbed an average of 64% of total contaminant dosage. Other studies found the face to be several times more permeable than broad body surfaces and an absorption rate of 100% for underarms and genitalia. And another peer-reviewed study showed 100% absorption for fragrance ingredients.”
http://www.downtoearth.org/health/general-health/your-skin-it-absorbs
Cosmetic companies are not regulated by the FDA. They are self regulated. So many of the products that go on the shelf are just not good for us. Some companies only care about profits and as marketing ploy claim their products are natural, when in fact, they are loaded with petrochemicals and toxins. These products often contain very little of the natural ingredients that we actually want to go on our bodies.
So what to do when so many products contain questionable ingredients?
It is wise to research the products that you use. The Environmental Working Group has reviewed over 78,000 products for safety. Go to EWG’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database: http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ and enter the product name in the search box. When I looked into the products that our family used, I was really surprised by the results. Don’t assume that because it is sold in a health food store, it is safe.
Read all product labels and avoid harmful, hazardous, ingredients. You can find a list of the worst chemicals to avoid on the Organic Beauty Talk website. http://www.organicbeautytalk.com/ingredients-to-avoid/
Buy from reputable companies. There are many businesses that are honest, transparent, and give a lot of information on their website about what they put into their cosmetics and grooming products. These companies consider our health, the environment and sustainability, when formulating the ingredients that go into their line.
